Georgiana Irimus (Apiland.ro): We're preparing Black Friday discounts, but the ApiLand anniversary remains our special moment of the year

On its 24th business anniversary, Apiland.ro answered a few of our questions courtesy of Georgiana Irimus. A conversation about progress, values and, of course, sales. ApiLand currently ranks first in the Start-Ups leaderboard, with more than 700 sales this round.

Georgiana Irimus (Apiland.ro): We're preparing Black Friday discounts, but the ApiLand anniversary remains our special moment of the year

The year 2002. What did the market look like when you entered it?

In 2002, the market for bee products in Romania was very different from today. Honey was already a well-known and appreciated product, but pollen, royal jelly and bee bread were far less present in Romanians' everyday diet.

The ApiLand story, however, starts much earlier. As early as 1990, our founder, Ovidiu Bodea, discovered pollen and began exploring the fascinating world of hive products. Passionate about a healthy, balanced lifestyle, he understood that these gifts of nature deserved to be known by as many people as possible.

In 1994, this passion turned into a mission: to bring pollen and other bee products closer to consumers. The year 2002 marks the official beginning of ApiLand, when we started selling Romanian dried pollen on foreign markets, including the United States.

We started from one product and a simple belief: raw, minimally processed Romanian bee products deserve a place in every family's diet. Today, 24 years after our founding, this belief continues to guide us.

What were the most important moments in ApiLand's evolution?

Over these 24 years, every stage has helped build the ApiLand brand, but a few moments defined our direction.

One of them was 2004, when we began paying special attention to raw monofloral pollen and to selecting varieties by floral origin. We wanted to make the most of the diversity of hive products and give consumers the chance to discover the characteristics of each variety.

In 2005 came our first Ecocert certifications, an important step in committing to clear standards of quality, provenance and traceability. This commitment continues today, and Ecocert certifications remain part of our dedication to quality.

Another important moment was 2006, when we began selling directly to end consumers. Until then, our business had been focused mainly on wholesale, but we wanted bee products to become accessible to everyone interested in a healthy lifestyle.

Next came the expansion of our portfolio and the development of foreign markets. In 2008 we introduced raw pollen into international wholesale, and in 2009 we added bee bread to the ApiLand portfolio. In 2011–2012 we launched our bee product tonics, formulas that combine several hive products.

In 2013, we became the first Manuka Health distributor in Romania, bringing MGO™ Manuka honey from New Zealand closer to Romanian consumers. It was an important moment for diversifying our portfolio and developing a new product category.

As the company grew, we kept investing in quality and in developing our internal processes. In 2016 we implemented ISO quality management, and in 2018 we were finalists in the Made in Romania project, initiated by the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

In 2019–2020 we strengthened our operations and our purchasing, quality control and logistics departments, and in 2021 the ApiLand team moved into a new headquarters, suited to a fast-growing company.

Looking back, what makes us happiest is that we managed to grow without losing touch with the values we started from: respect for nature, care for quality and the wish to bring hive products closer to people.

The product that best represents ApiLand

Without a doubt, raw pollen. It is the product that ties us most strongly to the company's beginnings and best reflects the ApiLand philosophy.

In the beginning, pollen was known mainly in its dried form. We chose to pay special attention to raw pollen, to preservation methods and to selecting monofloral varieties. We discovered an extraordinary diversity of varieties, each with its own nutritional profile and a distinct colour, aroma and floral origin.

Over time, we developed a diverse range of raw pollen, precisely to make the most of this floral richness and to let consumers choose the products that suit their dietary preferences and needs.

For us, raw pollen is more than a product in our portfolio. It is the beginning of a story, the courage to promote a lesser-known product and the wish to help people discover authentic bee products.

Today, the ApiLand portfolio also includes royal jelly, bee bread, propolis, Manuka honey, bee product tonics and other special formulas, but raw pollen remains our flagship product.

How would you describe ApiLand's experience in BusinessLeague and the collaboration with affiliates?

For us, BusinessLeague is an opportunity to build valuable partnerships and reach new communities through affiliates who understand the importance of authentic recommendations.

Bee products have a particularity: people want to understand what they are choosing, where the ingredients come from and how they can include the products in their daily diet. That is why we believe accurate information and trust are essential.

We want to work with partners who appreciate natural products and who can communicate their nutritional properties in a way that is responsible and relevant to their own communities.

Beyond sales and commissions, we value long-term relationships, transparent communication and the wish to grow together. We believe a successful partnership is not just about promoting an offer, but about building a relationship based on trust.

What does quality mean at ApiLand, and how important is the provenance of the products?

For us, quality starts with respect for nature and for the people who work with it.

We work directly with dedicated beekeepers, many of them from families with a long beekeeping tradition, for whom this work is more than a profession. It is a way of life, built around respect for bees and for nature.

Our partners' apiaries are located in places including less populated regions of Transylvania and along the Danube, in hilly and mountain areas where ecosystems are less affected by mechanisation and intensive agriculture.

We pay special attention to the selection of raw materials, floral origin, harvesting conditions and preservation methods. We believe in raw, minimally processed products that keep their natural characteristics. We don't want to needlessly alter what nature gives us, but to make sure the products reach consumers in the best possible condition.

At the same time, we constantly invest in quality control, traceability and product testing. Our Ecocert certifications and ISO quality management reflect this commitment.

Behind every jar is a team that knows its craft: from the colleagues responsible for purchasing and product selection to those who check every batch and make sure the products meet our standards.

Lessons from customers

We have learned that people are not only looking for quality products. They are also looking for accurate information, transparency and recommendations they can trust. That is why we try to be more than a bee products shop.

Through educational materials, information campaigns and constant communication with our community, we want to help people better understand hive products and how they can be part of a balanced lifestyle.

We have even been present in schools and high schools, through initiatives such as "Școala Altfel", to introduce children to the world of bees and their importance for nature. We believe an informed consumer can make better choices, and our role is to offer clear and responsible information.

Another thing we have learned is how important trust is. People come back when they have had a good experience, when they feel listened to and when they know there is a committed team behind the products.

What has changed and what has stayed the same?

A great deal has changed. We started by selling pollen and arrived at a diverse portfolio of bee products and nutritional formulas.

We moved from wholesale to a direct relationship with consumers, developed our online presence, grew the team and constantly invested in our internal processes.

Consumer habits have evolved too. Today, people pay more attention to product ingredients, to where they come from and to how they are made. They want transparency, information and products they can trust.

What has not changed is our philosophy: respect for nature, care for quality and belief in the value of hive products.

Our partner beekeepers continue to play an essential role in our work. We support responsible beekeeping practices and believe that the health of bees and the balance of nature are fundamental to the future of this field. Just as important are the people on the ApiLand team. Behind the brand are dedicated, experienced colleagues who contribute every day to the company's growth.

ApiLand isn't just about products. It is a team, partners, beekeepers and a community of people who share an appreciation for natural products. Today, after 24 years, we continue to build around the same values.

What are you preparing for Black Friday for affiliates and customers?

We are preparing special offers for Black Friday too, but the ApiLand anniversary campaign remains our favourite moment of the year.

The anniversary has a special meaning for us. It is not just a discount campaign, but a chance to celebrate 24 years in business and, above all, to thank the people who have been part of this story.

It is the moment when we celebrate our journey, hive products and the community that has grown alongside ApiLand. We want every anniversary to be a special experience for our customers, with attractive offers and the chance to discover or rediscover their favourite products.

Black Friday, of course, brings new shopping opportunities and great deals. For affiliates, both campaigns are important promotional moments, especially in autumn, when interest in bee products is growing.

We want to keep building attractive campaigns, long-term collaborations and the best possible experiences for customers. After 24 years, our greatest satisfaction is not just how much we have grown, but that people keep choosing us and trusting us.

And the ApiLand anniversary is our way of thanking them and celebrating together the story we have been building for more than two decades.
